No Reino Unido, o direito à participação dos adolescentes tem sido muito estimulado a partir da ratificação da Convenção dos Direitos da Criança (UNCRC), em 1991. Desde então, organizações governamentais e não-governamentais têm adotado como prática a inclusão de crianças e adolescentes em distintas iniciativas. No entanto, como se dá essa participação é objeto de intensos debates, onde muitos autores ressaltam a disparidade entre a retórica e a prática. A pesquisa que deu origem a esse artigo, realizada com crianças e adolescentes em situação de vulnerabilidade na Escócia, demonstrou que existem muitas barreiras sociais e estruturais que dificultam a participação. Um dos argumentos centrais do artigo é demonstrar como a incorporação da retórica de “ouvir as crianças”, pode, de fato, silenciar as suas vozes em relação à sua participação em pesquisa.

Title: Protection or paternalism: challenges for young people’s participation in research

In the UK, since the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in 1991, children’s rights to participate has been increasingly promoted. It is now common practice amongst both statutory and non statutory agencies to include children and young people in a diverse range of initiatives and consultations. It is unclear however the extent to which these are truly participatory with many authors suggesting that there is a disparity between the rhetoric and practice of participation. From my own personal experience of conducting research with a group of marginalised young people in Scotland I have found that there are a number of social and structural barriers which make children´s and young people´s participation difficult to achieve, even when you are committed to a participatory agenda. In what follows I will explore some of the difficulties in engaging a group of marginalised youth in research. I will argue that the ways in which the rhetoric of listening to children has been incorporated in practice may effectively silence some young people´s voices in terms of their future participation in research.
