Gramsci and religion: a reading from the Latin America

Neste artigo se apresenta uma análise das notas de Gramsci sobre a religião, em particular, sobre a igreja católica e o cristianismo. São destacadas as distinções que Gramsci faz entre os elementos revolucionários do cristianismo e a estrutura feudal da igreja. A esta, que conduz as massas populares na condição de subalternidade, Gramsci contrapõe a “filosofia da práxis” que promove o autogoverno e a conquista da hegemonia. Na segunda parte se estabelece um contraponto entre as considerações de Gramsci sobre cristianismo (e Igreja Católica) e o papel da Teologia da Libertação na América Latina. Aqui, nestas últimas décadas, setores significativos de cristãos, utilizando instrumentos analíticos do marxismo e do pensamento de Gramsci, fizeram uma “opção pelos pobres” e conferiram uma nova configuração à religião e à politica.

Title: Gramsci and religion: a reading from the Latin America

This article proposes an analysis of Gramsci’s notes on religion, in particular on Christianity’s and the catholic Church’s. We highlight his distinctions of Gramsci between the revolutionary dimensions which Christianity contains and the feudal structure of the Church. To this latter, which maintains the popular masses in a condition of subalternity, Gramsci counterposes the “philosophy of praxis” directed towards self-government and the conquest of hegemony. In the second part of the article, we establish a counterpoint between Gramsci’s considerations on Christianity (and the Catholic Church) and the role of Liberation Theology in Latin America. Here indeed, over the last few decades, significant sectors of Christians, making use of the analytical instruments provided by Marxism and by the thought of Gramsci, have made their ‘choice for the poor’, thereby giving religion and politics a new configuration.
