Faith in the street culture of Mexican youth

Este texto analisa o imaginário da fé entre os jovens que vivem nas ruas da cidade do México, centrando-se em duas principais seitas: as que adoram São Judas Tadeu e aquela que adoram a Santa Morte. Os testemunhos dos jovens mostram como a sua fé serve para fazer frente à ausência de uma família e concede um sentido de segurança que os ajuda a sobreviver na rua. Vemos como as crenças e os símbolos religiosos reforçam sua identificação com outros jovens na rua e os dota de um sentido de pertencimento a este mundo de vida.

Title:Faith in the street culture of Mexican youth

This text analyzes faith among youth who live on the streets of Mexico City, focusing on the two main sects: those who worship Saint Jude and those who worship the Santa Muerte. The testimonies of these youth show how their faith serves to cope with the absence of family and gives them a sense of security that helps them to survive on the street. More significantly, however, we see how religious symbols and beliefs reinforce their identification with other youth on the streets and give them a sense of belonging to this lifeworld.
